Tony Koretz : Melodic Guitar Rock and BluesDestiny Album Reviews

"A burgeoning underground rock-culture is growing in New Zealand, and this super-guitarist and dynamic vocalist Tony Koretz could be at the forefront. Tony is heavily influenced by the likes of Satriani, Vai, and Van Halen. The title track is comparable to All Along The Watchtower, although seen through the glass darkly. Tony's Wilderness and Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven both share an apprehension of a crescendo, after a long and building folksy theme. The anthem Secrets is followed Hotline, that will be a concert favourite. Hot Coals sparkles of Tony's influences, that obviously include The Scorpions. The Way Of Love is a melodic Euro-Celtic love song. Tony completes Destiny with his professional-confessional: Crazy Life. Major fans of Seventies styled rock i.e. rocking love melodies, fuzzy-soaring guitar-polytechnics, and powerful vocals, will really enjoy Destiny. It's like a step back in time with today's technology."

"Tony is a singer/guitarist from New Zealand, coming to us with a nice album of timeless rock born in the 70's and arrived at today without contaminations. Destiny contains several heavy slow of heavy medium slow songs such as Ever After Now, Destiny and Crazy Life, tracks for the highways, and you'll find here also acoustic songs like the short instrumental Gnos citsuoca (read in reverse mode please) and the dreamy The Wilderness ,somehow close to Bon Jovi's Wanted Dead or Alive. The toughest tracks are the raw hard rock of "hot coals" (next to canuck hard rock of the 80's) and "hotline",cheerful catchy rock song. Then we have the electric blues Freedom Cry with a long, flaming solo of guitar, and the paced hard rock Ride the Wind with a great sound of guitars."

"New Zealand is not really a place to look for rock bands, but there are exceptions, such as guitarist/bassist/vocalist TONY KORETZ. He has released a CD titled Destiny that sounds pretty nice actually.Tony himself has produced the album very well. Musically it is not pure AOR, but I would rather call it early 80's rock'n'roll in the style of early Benny Mardones, Jimmy Barnes, Life ('cocoon') and Billy Squire. This is just pure rock with raw vocals a big guitar sound, but still melodic songs, well I think you get the picture.....There are twelve songs on the album. The best songs are the heavy semi melodic rockballads Ever After Now, Destiny, Hotline and Crazy Life. Most of the songs have a slow tempo, but there's one song that can be labelled as up tempo and that's the melodic rocker Hot Coals. This last song is the best one of the whole record and sounds like Jimmy Barnes fronting Santers back in the early 80's! Anyway, there aren't many weak songs to be found on the CD or it should be the acoustic tingled songs The Wilderness, The Way of Love and Gnos Citsuoca.

"When this CD started playing, I thought that Tony Koretz was really Neil Young. Tony's vocals are very similar to Neil's in the first song, but then moved into Tony's own personal tone as the album progressed. The musicianship and lyrical flavor of this album is absolutely amazing. The songs have a psychedelic vibe to them that is enriched with a subtle Pink Floyd overtone. The music is very progressive in nature. Tony rarely sticks to the same template. His no boundaries attitude makes for one very interesting album. It's hard to say what type of music fan will enjoy this album, but I have no doubt that there are many out there. This is one very good work of art."

"Stylistically this is very much '70s rocker territory. Arpeggioed acoustic guitar in verses, anthemic choruses often sung in high voice, long and complicated electric guitar solos used regularly. The type of music has been kept to very accurately in production, songs and artwork and so may well appeal to fans of '70s rock."

"Tony plays spiritual rock a'la The Cult meets seventies classic rock...What I like about this album is that each song has something different to offer which kept me interested right the way through. As I said, Tony's material is very similar to The Cult and my favorite songs tend to be the more catchier tracks like Ride The Wind, Freedom Cry and Law Or Life which are all superb rock songs...a very talented musician as well as a gifted songwriter who knows exactly when to let the melodies flow which is what makes the songs on this record appealing to fans of good ol classic rock."
